Esquimalt High School’s Scholarship Committee and the rest of the school staff would like to congratulate Elizabeth Kuryodev (EHS ’13) who received the Clive Kelly Award and the Governor General’s Awards for achieving the most outstanding academic record of all students in Esquimalt High School’s graduating class of 2013.
Elizabeth is a passionate activist, particularly with respect to women’s rights and empowerment. She joined Raise Your Voice after collaborating with Nik and her youth leadership group, Step Up, to host a fundraiser for the scholarship fund.
Elizabeth is a regular volunteer with Vic West Community Centre, the Ukrainian Cultural Centre, and the City of Victoria. In recognition of her work with women and girls, she was one of two delegates chosen to represent Canada at the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts International Forum on the UN Millennium Development goals in Chicago, and was awarded the Women in Business Milestone Teen Award in October 2012. Elizabeth co-leads a group of young girls in Sparks (Girl Guides), peer tutors students in English, teaches outdoor education with Girl Guides of Canada, and trains in Ukrainian, ballet, and ballroom dance. For the last 3 years she has helped organize an annual fundraiser for women’s transition housing with Esquimalt Youth for Care and Inclusion. Most recently, Elizabeth was selected to travel with Girl Guides Canada and Canada World Youth to work in Kimende, Kenya where she will collaborate with local communities to preserve the surrounding Kikuyu forests. She is studying international development and globalization at the University of Ottawa.
